The Power of Presence

The Power of Presence

There are moments when life asks nothing of us except that we notice it.

The warmth of morning light resting on the kitchen table. The sound of laughter drifting from another room. The gentle rhythm of your own breath before the day begins.

These moments are not extraordinary.

They are life itself.

Somewhere along the way, many of us began believing that life was waiting somewhere ahead of us. After the project is finished. After the children are grown. After retirement. After life becomes easier.

Yet life has never lived there.

It has always lived here.

Perhaps that is why so many of us feel as though something is missing. We have become skilled at moving through our days, yet forgotten how to truly arrive in them.

Have you ever watched a child tell a story?

Their eyes sparkle. Their hands dance through the air. They are completely immersed in the moment, inviting you into their world.

For a few precious minutes, nothing else matters.

One day those little hands will grow larger. The stories will become different. The laughter you almost missed will become a memory.

Be there for it.

Not because you should.

Because it is a moment that will never exist again.

The same invitation quietly follows us into our work.

The person standing before you is more than a customer.

They are someone's parent.

Someone's child.

Someone carrying a joy or a sorrow you cannot see.

What happens when a greeting becomes genuine? When you pause long enough to truly listen? When a smile is offered, not out of habit, but because another human being has entered your day?

A few moments of undivided attention may become something they remember long after they have forgotten why they walked through your door.

The same is true for those who walk beside us each day.

An employee who arrives with quiet integrity.

A colleague who always offers a helping hand.

How often do we notice what has become familiar?

Sometimes the simplest words carry the greatest weight.

"I appreciate you."

"I see how much you care."

"Thank you."

To be seen is one of the deepest longings we share.

Perhaps that longing begins with seeing one another.

Perhaps it also begins with seeing ourselves.

Life rarely shouts.

It whispers.

It waits patiently in birdsong before the traffic begins. In rain gathering on the leaves. In a breeze that brushes across your skin before moving on.

It has never stopped speaking.

We have simply become very busy.

And then, almost without noticing, evening arrives.

You turn on the tap.

Warm water flows across your hands.

For just a moment, there is nowhere else you need to be.

The day begins to soften.

As you lift the warm cloth to your face, notice its gentle touch. As you warm a few drops of oil or a small amount of cream between your palms, pause before your hands begin to move.

This skin has carried you through every season of your life.

Every smile.

Every tear.

Every moment of becoming.

Perhaps caring for it is more than a routine.

Perhaps it is a quiet act of gratitude.

Not because your skin asks to be perfected.

But because it has faithfully carried your story.

Maybe this is what ritual has always been.

Not adding something more to our lives.

Simply returning to the life that has been here all along.

Tonight, let the warm water linger for one breath longer.

Let your hands move with kindness.

Allow yourself to arrive.

You may discover it was never your skin asking for your attention.

It was you.

May this moment stir the knowing within.
